CORONADO SCHOOL—523 N Fourth St 

A 2-room building known as Dunbar School had 2 teachers

Building torn down and replaced by North Side School for grades 1-3

Later renamed Coronado School -- closed in 1967

Building occupied by Tucumcari Area Vocational School for classrooms

and Ferrier science from late 1970’s until closed in 1980’s

 

FOUR POINTS SCHOOL---702 E Aber St

Built in 1917 and called Four Points because of the design

Two stories with 8 classrooms and an auditorium

For the school year 1942-1943 8 more classrooms were added

Old building continued in use until 1952

  

New wing built in 1965 and name changed to Zia Elementary School

Students transferred to new Elementary School in 2000

Building sold to private investor

 

CENTRAL SCHOOL— 416 S Adams St

Built 1903 for $8000 and served as elementary school until 1933

Used for various government agencies and then as a hospital

School resumed but closed in 1963 and transformed into

Tucumcari Historical Museum

 

TUCUMCARI HIGH SCHOOL--- 900 S Third St

Built as Tucumcari High School in 1909-1910 for $30,000 but called The Castle because of design

Classroom space doubled and gymnasium added in 1917-1918

Named Third Street Elementary School  after new High School was built in 1934-1935

Classroom area and gym burned  March 4, 1951

New building 1952-1953 named Granger Elementary School

All elementary students transferred to new Elementary School on 11th Street

Building had some fires and is currently being demolished.

 

TUCUMCARI HIGH SCHOOL--- 900 S Fourth St

Built 1935 for $95,000 Auditorium burned in 1975

 

 

TUCUMCARI HIGH SCHOOL—1100 S Seventh St

Opened September 1961

Rhodes Field house,

 Rattler Stadium and Track, Band/Chorus Building

Rattler Gym built 1948

Mesa Cafeteria burned 1972, then replaced

Auditorium built c.1986-1987

Currently being remodeled again.

 

MOUNTAIN VIEW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL—1600 S Rock Island St

Built 1952---students to new Elementary School now

Currently houses Schools Federal Credit Union and Early Head start Program of

Eastern Plains Community Action Agency

 

BUENA VISTA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL—2400 S Eighth St

Built 1963--students now attend new Elementary School

Currently houses Tucumcari Schools Administrative Offices

 

TUCUMCARI ELEMENTARY SCHOOL—1700 S Ninth St

Opened in 2000-- complex includes classrooms, gymnasium and cafeteria

 

TUCUMCARI  MIDDLE SCHOOL—900 S Fifth St

Built  after demolition of old THS on 4th St

Trojan Gym, Mesa Cafeteria

 

MESALANDS COMMUNITY COLLEGE—900 S Tenth St

Established as Tucumcari Area Vocational School in 1980 by Tucumcari School Board

Renamed Mesa Technical College in 1995 and have own Board of Trustees

Became accredited as a junior college and name changed to Mesalands

Also operates Mesalands Dinosaur Museum at 222 E Laughlin St

High School Newspaper

1911 First one named “High School Echo”

1912 changed to “The Yucca”

1926 became “The Rattler”

 

Graduating Class

1913 First class had 6 girls and 2 boys

 

School Board

1913 First for Independent City School System

Mandated enrollment between ages 7 and 14

 

Football Team

1921—formed by some men in town who raised funds

Originally called “Rattlesnakes”, then “Rattlers”

B squad once called “Buttons”

1959 Class A State Champions – Coach Bill Litchfield

2002 Class AA State Champions – Coach Dub Smith

 

Basketball Team

1950 State Champions for all classes-Coach Jim Rudd

RATTLER REUNIONS

First annual one held August 6,  7,  & 8, 1971

(One gal wrote that she had never had such a huggin’, cryin’, laughin’ nostalgic good time)

Every class since 1913, except seven, was represented
